Heather has been a part of Secession since its inception, working at her studio located within the gallery. Heather’s works strike a balance between precise design and spontaneous, intuitive gesture. In her paintings, she incorporates materials and techniques from traditionally feminine, labor-intensive domestic arts, crocheting lace and embroidering details painstakingly by hand onto the surface. She starts with a textile and applies many layers of paint and medium. Some layers are random and uncontrolled, some emphasize the fabric’s ornamental aspects, and some are translucent or pulled away completely to reveal what’s beneath. Beginning with a decorative fabric, then alternately obscuring and accentuating the underlying pattern, she hopes to strike a beautiful balance between the orderly and the chaotic.
