Renee DeCarlo Johnson
Renee’s curiosity and focus lie in this disconnected space, where she finds direction in where and how to proceed – where the color will go, and which layers will float to the surface. Using gouache and stain, she clusters the panels together, connecting the lines and then proceeding to pull deeper compositions out of the chaos, creating compositions that reminisce on both natural and man-made systems and landscapes. Drawing is much like journaling for her and actions of building lines and colors take the place of words on a page. Renee is certain that many of her immediate surroundings affect everything she makes, and certainly the colors she is drawn to.
