San Francisco, Calif.–For the Fall exhibition at Blackbird Bar, Secession Annex is proud to present Geothermal, a solo show of new works by artist Rachel Znerold. Geothermal will be at Blackbird Bar from October 7 – November 23, 2014 with an opening reception on October Octobter 11, 2014 from 6-8 PM that is free and open to the public.

Geothermal is Rachel Znerold’s third show with Secession Art & Design and will present a selection of the artist’s new mixed media paintings from her latest journey to Iceland. Inspired by the dramatic and overwhelming geography of this northern country, Znerold’s artworks are abstracted landscapes that capture the intensity of the scenery, while encapsulating the artist’s emotional response to these tableaus.

Znerold describes the experience of Iceland as  “wild, primal and raw” with an almost “wet sky.” She isn’t the first adventurous soul to romanticize Northern landscapes. The extreme environment presents itself with rugged topography, but also with a different quality of light and relationship to time, depending on the season. Znerold’s trip took place in the Summer and was bathed with perpetual light. These paintings reflect that sense of a suspended time, where shadows are hard to find.

The imagery of Geothermal reflects the charged atmosphere of what Znerold refers to as “Iceland’s magnetic pull,” which she discusses as being related to the land’s geothermal energy source. Geothermal energy is literally harbored underneath your feet as you walk over the terrain; the earth is at work and alive. With her signature built up canvases, of paint, embroidery and beadwork, these works display surfaces that are alive, mirroring Znerold’s subject matter in both physical form and emotional spirit. Geothermal promises to be a truly exciting show of a painter whose new work is as illuminated as the Icelandic Summer.
