Secession Art & Design Blog

Secession Art & Design opened our Bernal Heights location in August of 2007, and has since grown to represent over 50 independent artists and designers. Our retail location is a gallery, boutique, and workspace combined, creating an untraditional storefront that allows customers to experience curated shows by owner, Eden Stein, and see the process of art being made in-house by Heather Robinson.

Hearts and Bees to save Secession!

Secession Art & Design has been closed to the public for 43 days as a non-essential business during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the shelter-in-place order has just been extended through May. Our goal is to get creative with our fundraising and keep our fingers crossed. I am still responsible for rent, bills, insurance, and employment. In the past, 80% of our sales came from people shopping our store in person. It's been a major shift to transition to an online-only business. While I wait for a potential rent reduction or commercial moratorium on rents, local and federal assistance, and grants to help with the unknown future, I know if I do nothing my small business will close in the next 6 months.

Two of our talented artists are donating a portion of their sales to support our cause that art is essential! We've just added Shane Izykowski's beautiful anatomical resin hearts in rose gold and gold, and Shannon Amidon's encaustic hexagon bee series to our online art collection. Both make lovely Mother's Day gifts and this gives us time to ship. More than ever, I'm wearing my heart on my sleeve. I am constantly reminded that my customers are my hive and support. Thank you for purchasing art to help us fundraise our survival.

You rock, Eden
