Secession Art & Design Blog

Secession Art & Design opened our Bernal Heights location in August of 2007, and has since grown to represent over 50 independent artists and designers. Our retail location is a gallery, boutique, and workspace combined, creating an untraditional storefront that allows customers to experience curated shows by owner, Eden Stein, and see the process of art being made in-house by Heather Robinson.

Support Black-Owned Businesses

Watching the death of George Floyd on the news and replaying "I can't breathe" in my head all week has filled my heart and soul with sadness. How is it possible that a police officer can take someone's life like that? How is it possible that there is so much hate and racism? On Facebook, I paused on Tuesday. It's not business as usual right now, and I want my community of friends, past employees, and fellow business owners to know that I am listening, feeling, and soaking up like a sponge how to be a mama that teaches her son to respect people.

Musically, I keep replaying Tribe Called Quest's album "We got it from Here. Thank you 4 Your service..."  Each song is powerful and sings to so many of the issues that keep repeating history. There is strength in music and protest. If you are looking for ways to support right now, please use your dollars to support black-owned businesses by eating and shopping their online stores or buying a gift card for future use.

Secession loves our fashion community. Two of our favorites in the bay area are Taylor Jay and Ray Darten. Both of these lady bosses are pure inspiration to me. I hope you love their shops as much as I do.

XO, Eden
