Secession Art & Design Blog

Secession Art & Design opened our Bernal Heights location in August of 2007, and has since grown to represent over 50 independent artists and designers. Our retail location is a gallery, boutique, and workspace combined, creating an untraditional storefront that allows customers to experience curated shows by owner, Eden Stein, and see the process of art being made in-house by Heather Robinson.

Graffiti and Breakfast

Secession Art & Design sees a white wall as an opportunity to curate, like a graffiti artist seeing the side of a building as a large canvas. Our featured artist this week is Nate Tan. For our event, he painted Mission Street. This iconic view will always be in my memory as my route to Secession.

Thank you to Nate1 Design for creating our 15th Anniversary Pop-up drawing of 307 Cortland! Shop art online now, or save the dates August 4-7 to see the gallery in person.

first moved to Mission Bernal in 1999. This micro-neighborhood has the feel of a big city, but also of a small village, where you know all your neighbors and local businesses. Our home was on Tiffany Avenue, a small bike-route street just a few blocks from the gallery. On the corner is one of our favorite coffee shops, Cafe Seventy8. My little one often woke up before the sun, so we would race garbage trucks at 6am on our adventure to the cafe. We were always greeted with a smile and the bagels were always delicious. Around lunchtime, I'd order a Heavenly Veggie sandwich. If you are in the neighborhood, stop by this hyper-local cafe and support Annet, Katie, and the team!
