Secession Art & Design Blog

Secession Art & Design opened our Bernal Heights location in August of 2007, and has since grown to represent over 50 independent artists and designers. Our retail location is a gallery, boutique, and workspace combined, creating an untraditional storefront that allows customers to experience curated shows by owner, Eden Stein, and see the process of art being made in-house by Heather Robinson.

Art, Activism and Coffee

15th Anniversary Show, August 4-7 at 307 Cortland Ave

Secession Art & Design is a place where our artists can experiment and speak their hearts. For our 15th Anniversary show, Olena McMurtrey created these two incredible paintings that are healing in their scale, and allowed Olena to take a moment to breathe and just paint. I was really moved by Olena's post about the war in Ukraine. Her honesty and insight have illustrated how war impacts people and how artists create communities that can make change and awareness.

"While the war is raging in Ukraine (the land where I was born and spent my childhood) and Russia is bombing civilians - on the other side of the planet, the sun still rises. The mountains have the silent beauty of the north, the Pacific waves still rolling tides around San Francisco shores, and oil paint still mixes with the same consistency of heavenly butter. The tulips quietly bloomed in my backyard and snow melted on the peaks of Tahoe."- Olena

These gorgeous paintings by Olena McMurtrey are available for immediate purchase online. Please let us know if you'd like free delivery within the Bay Area.

Our featured sponsor this week is Pinhole Coffee. The owner, JoEllen, has taken every opportunity with her coffee shop to do activism and donate to amazing causes! She is a mama of a small child and a true champion of the community. I am honored that she is sponsoring our event. If you are in Bernal Heights, please stop by this pinhole-sized coffee shop and treat yourself to an amazing cup of art and a staff who celebrates every person who comes in the door.

Thank you, Pinhole Coffee, for sponsoring our 15th Anniversary Gallery Popup!
